Parents who have an arrangement to share their child or children in legal and physical custody rights have joint custody. During this type of arrangement, parents participate in the child’s life equally, including the child’s upbringing, decision making, and welfare, as well as having day-to-day responsibility for them. Many times, true joint custody is very difficult for both parents to engage in and is very rare.
There are two different types of joint custody.

Joint Legal Custody

The most common type of joint custody, this arrangement means that both parents share long term decision making rights, have a say so in the raising of the child and their welfare. Physical custody is awarded to only one parent in this situation.

Joint Physical Custody

In this type of custody, both parents are considered the custodial parents. Both parents have decision making rights in the child’s welfare and raising. In addition, the child will live half the time with one parent and half time with the other. Various arrangements for living situations are made during a court hearing.
There are other types of custody in addition to these. Be sure to visit back with us, next blog post to learn more. If you need help with any of the custody information above or are considering a divorce contact our attorney in Raleigh, today.
